Why do Windows 10 updates take so long?

Mine have just taken 45 minutes when I closed my machine down and nearly another hour when I booted it up again.
Does the update process work differently from earlier versions of Windows or is it just such a badly written piece of crap that it needs constant huge patches?

I understand they're changing the way they're done.

Naughty indeed!

I have a desktop PC with Win 10 but have not been using it. I also have a Win 10 laptop on order. I'd be interested to know what settings you change, and why. I want to minimise the information that MS can trawl up without my knowledge!

It's the very epitomy of bloatware.

The anniversary edition took longer tu update than Shaun needed to move CC to a new server. My privacy settings remained the same but there are a few more to fiddle with and now I can't switch Cortana off without hacking the registry, so I've blinded her instead.

I'm trying to persuade a Win 7 VM to update. So far it's been running overnight and is showing no indication of getting anywhere. I may have restricted access today.

I don't know why they just didn't reintroduce the annoying paperclip and have done with it
