Actually getting out the door when it is raining is the hardest part. If I'm out and it starts raining, it usually doesn't bother me. It can be refreshing. But when you look out the window and the rain is coming down, I find it really difficult to get my arse in gear and get out. Think it's some kind of psychological thing
This for me too

I'm retired and ride 3, 4 or 5 days a week. I don't ride if it's wet, cos I can wait for it to stop. IF I'm out and it rains I put on waterproofs and continue my ride, but why get the bike and me wet if I don't have to? In my commuting days rain was merely a nuisance and I regularly got wet.

I find it difficult to motivate myself to start a ride in the rain, but will do it on forum rides, audax rides and sportives.

It is much easier going out on a day where rain is not forecast until much later in the ride. I'll do that and put up with the rain. It's usually not too bad as long as you are dressed for it.

I have done a few rides where the weather turned ridiculously nasty and I chose to cut them short. When the rain is so intense and cold that the roads start flooding and hypothermia becomes a real possibility then there is no joy in it, and I adopt the motto 'discretion is the better part of valour', go home, and live to ride another day!
Pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly.

We cycle and we live in England (those of us who do) so we have to ride in English weather. Surprisingly enough, in my particular part of England, rain is not unknown.

I don't mind riding in the rain. It usually doesn't rain for long and if you have the right gear and you are not cold then it's OK. However if it incessant cold rain then, that's not so enjoyable.

I love getting my hair wet!:giggle:
Which one?

I'm another who rarely sets off in the rain, but if I'm already out I'm out. I won't turn back if it starts raining. Once your wet through you can't get any wetter

[EDIT] I did set off in the rain today, but I was meeting my Son in town for the Bolton Skyride so I had precious little choice in the matter really :surrender:

If it is raining at the time then I probably won't set off until it stops unless I need to get somewhere, but otherwise I don't mind if it rains. Yes it might mean you need to spend a bit longer rubbing the bike down afterwards but is that a bad thing? Spending an extra bit of time with the bike?

If you get wet, then you get wet. I find it is rather refreshing, especially if you've been going for it... I would prefer it to be raining then a baking hot day!

well i've just got back from a 12 mile ride in the rain experience. I remember now why i'm not so keen on doing it. Freezing dead fingers, soaked backside, the shoes are soaking even though i've had overshoes on and the worst of all....shrivelled winky syndrome!!

Summer: I don't go out in rain, if it rains while out, then you just have to put up with it.
Winter: No choice a lot of the time, but at least you expect it.

I know why I ride a bike, it's because I feel good about it, but I don't enjoy rain. There are lots of cyclists who for some reason like to give grief to those who don't like rain, I haven't worked this out yet, perhaps they haven't worked out why they ride yet. Ditto for riding in Spring, it's full of hope, it's fantastic.

The reason i went out in the first place Andy was to look at a bike that a mate has had in a shed for ages. It's for sale and it has mudguards which'll be a bit of a novelty for me. I couldn't give the bike a proper looking over due to the weather but it's fairly lightweight and he only wants 30 quid for it. All being well i'll have myself a winter bike soon. The shifters are on the downtube but i like a bit of retro!!

Finding a nice cafe or tearoom for a pot of tea and slice of cake soon sorts out any discomfort from cycling in the wet, besides the amount of money I've spent on wet weather riding gear it would be a shame not to put it to good use
