Why do you cycle?

Because I still get the same daft boyish grin on my face that I did as a kid 40 years ago, as I cycle along, keeping fit, enjoying the fresh air and having fun! No other form of transport comes close.

I wasn't as fit as I should have been on a walking holiday. So I got home and thought 'what about that old bike lurking in the garage?' Got it out, dusted it off, thought that maybe as a dim and distant target I might one day be able to bike to work. Discovered that unlike any other sport or exercise I've ever tried, cycling is fun!

Did my first commute about a month later, much to the surprise of self, spouse, colleagues.

Have just moved work site and now have 13.5 miles each way (instead of 10.2). It's more miles, and takes longer, which means more fun in the day.

So I cycle because I love it. And I agree with the silly grin it gives you. Any side-effect (weight down, size down, fitness up, environment saved(!), petrol costs vastly diminshed, etc) is just a bonus.

I enjoy it and IMO its a practical mode of transport.

Yes, I realised several years ago that my bike IS my 'wheels', and love pootling about on them.

There are other reasons though: when I was 15, during the school holidays, I cycled close to 30 miles every day for about a month and got to be 'well fit'.
I was going to do the same next summer, but was diagnosed with Leukaemia, so everything all went to pot and I never ever did get round to repeating it in the quite the same way, even though I would later regularly cycle home from College in Glasgow.

I have decided that I want to be as fit as I was then and more, but now that I'm older, other things always get in the way, so I'm waiting for the summer season to end so I can be left in peace to get on with it like a trooper.

Oh and also, I am a VERY country member of the Glasgow Rowing club and realise that the more I cycle and get fit, the better I'll be if/when I ever go back and start rowing seriously.

As so many of you have said before "it's fun and brings a smile to my face". It also gets me to work, the shops, swimming pool, doctors, ...
Bit like a car realy but cheaper and faster (in most cases).

The bike is one of man's greatest inventions, and we can all have one! Can't say that about most things can you. Free (almost) travel, increases sense of well-being and allows you to look admiringly at your own (incredibly well-sculpted) legs. The latter may be a little narcissistic but hey, who ain't?. Tee hee...

use to enjoy ctt ing when a lot younger , then just got fed up with traveling to work via car so found a job close to home and now enjoy cycling nearly every day doing 6 miles in total , but sure helps on fitness and stress never mind cheaper than car

Normally, just to get to work and back.
Plus the occasional long leisure ride...Went through a village recently and someone left boxes of eggs for sale at the end of their drive, with a little tin to drop your money in. Those crazy country bumpkins, with their rustic ways, what are they like, eh.
