Why is the UK poking it's nose into other people's business?

So you really think that stopping the Taliban & Al Qaeda was all just one big pretext?

No, but clearly Afghanistan is of considerable strategic interest to the US for reasons unrelated to the Taliban and AQ. Frankly, I don't think the US ever gave a toss about the Taliban - didn't they initially try to do a deal with the Taliban that would have left them in place?

In relation to AQ, I don't see the US invading Mali, for example.

You could argue that pretty much every country in the middle east is of considerable strategic interest to the US. Oil was not the reason they invaded which was my point.

Again, Mali is catch 22. Does the US intervene like it did in Kosovo and get called murderers, imperialists etc? Or should it not intervene and then people use that as a stick to beat them with like you just did.

Poking our nose into other people's business? Like the USA did when it bailed us out of WW2?

What do you mean by that? I stand to be corrected but USA joined WW2 after the Pearl Harbour attack. Joining the fight against Germany in Europe was more to do with Germany being ally to Japan; US provided GB with resources but at a price - but we must not ignore the sacrifice in human lives by US servicemen.

I have Syrian friends who still have relatives in Syria. Apparently the existing Assad regime has commited a lot of horrendous acts that were not reported widley in the past with 10's of thousands killed. The advent of the internet has allowed the current stories to get out. I am not condoning supplying arms to the rebel forces but the status quo has been pretty horrible for a large proportion of the population for many years. Just an observation no more.

I think in recent history, we (the UK) have stuck our nose into too many fights that had naff all to do with us.

Why can't we go Swiss for a couple of decades and have a rest?

A nice thought...
I remember when the terrorist threat started restrictions and security checks at airports some years ago. While in Cyprus at the time, i asked the MD of a company i was working at if they'd had to increase their security (a bit naive with hindsight)..
His reply...'Why would we ^_^ ?..we don't go poking our noses in other peoples business'
