Used to see these lorries all the time stuffed full of poor animals, presumably on their way to the abattoir. Was overtaken far too close by one this morning and it got me thinking about how rarely they are seen nowadays: I hadn't seen one for years.
Is it because they now ply their ghastly trade at the dead of night to avoid upsetting people's sensibilities?

Not necessarily, maybe they were being taken away for their summer holidays where they can roam the hills freely for a few months.
I haven't noticed any recent changes in the trade.

meat ain't murder . if eating animals was so wrong why does Bacon taste soooo good.

I am a member of PETA - People Eating Tasty Animals, I wear leather shoes too , in fact i have a lovely chamois pad in a nice pair of cyling shorts.

the local vege squad many moons ago had a phase of asking meat eaters to justify eating meat... which is fair enough i suppose after years of meat eaters asking the vege's to justify not eating meat... why they got so offended when i answered "I'm not an animal lover" I'll never know.

If we did not eat the meat, there would not be many cows, sheep etc. in the UK. I cannot see farmers keeping them simply because they look pretty.

If they came up to me while I was tucking into my quarter-pounder, I'd say "Hey, the cow in this burger was a vegetarian and look what happened to it. And when we run out of cows, we're gonna come after YOU, grass-eater!"

Yup, Dec 2009 The Bull ring was closed due to a bull making one last futile dash for freedom.

You see quite a few on the A30 in Devon and Cornwall, and on the Exeter to Bristol stretch of the M5. I love meat but I do hate seeing those lambs and calves peering out of the slots in the side of the trucks.

There ought to be more of them?

This is dredging up the dregs of memories of the Foot and Mouth outbreak of 2001 - but wasn't one of the factors that made it so difficult to deal with the fact that so many small and local abattoirs had closed down? That animals were having to be transported far greater distances?

The worst truckers by far in my book are the timber lorries, absolutely plagued by these in the Borders, often in convoys and always appear to be driven as fast as possible -[/quote]

I agree; the Longtown roads can be very bad and you always seem to find one on a narrow by-way.
