There ought to be more of them?

This is dredging up the dregs of memories of the Foot and Mouth outbreak of 2001 - but wasn't one of the factors that made it so difficult to deal with the fact that so many small and local abattoirs had closed down? That animals were having to be transported far greater distances?
The other factor in the spread of Foot and mouth was the transportation of the corpses of infected animals though disease-free areas.

I see lot's on the main routes round here but then it's two fairly rural counties.

I would like to see less of them but thats not because I object to the transportation of animals but simply I would like to see the localised farming and food industry to return at some stage.

farmers would still need to move them from Farm to slaughterhouse , and bulk lorry is far more cost effective than multiple trips in the Landrover and Ifor Williams trailer. the big haulier where i grew up was JH Jones of Rhuthin . a Huge chunk of their work was local transport of flocks to local slaughter , before the mismanagement of animal slaughter by one of the dire governments this country always gets

I thought there was a network of secret cattle tunnels built by the government leading from farms to abbatoirs, to make it look like there are fewer cattle lorries on the roads. They have earned the nickname, by those in the know, of "Morissey Tunnels", and you can read about them here: (safe link)

depends where you are - livestock farming and dairy has moved westwards over the last twenty years.

That's because they fly...[/quote]
Hence the recent outbreak of Swine Flew .
