Turned right on to main road this morning and noticed cyclist to the left about 150m away, normally that would have made me put my toe down to not be overtaken but as I might have had a few drinks last night and might have felt a little fragile I had already decided to cruise in. Anyway, I settled into my ride doing about 18 on this flat stretch - guy soon enough overtakes me at about 25 - I say hello as he passes but he completely ignores me.. no matter not in the mood for a conversation. After about half a mile he starts to slow down so I unintentially catch him up I end up having to slow following for about a mile (not getting any benefit from a toe as I notice he is spitting out snot every few seconds so hang a little back). Eventually reach a bit of an incline and he drops to a snails pace so fed up I got out the saddle and fly past him with a cheery "see ya" lol

Why try and overtake if you can't make it stick? Maybe he was going to a strava segment or something?

He probably wanted to make it stick but ran out of puff on the incline, he was probably cussing you as you passed ^_^

The amount of people I've sailed past on my little Brompton who've given me a filthy look and then tried their best to catch up. I only overtake them cos theyre being too slow - though I do like a race along Horse Guards Road of a morning. :becool:

I thought I was a competitive person, but some cyclists take it to a new level!

I was out for a casual ride on Saturday with a friend of mine. We overtook a cyclist who looked quite proficient, just simply because we were riding at the same pace throughout. As I passed I said good morning, and he reciprocated.

Half a mile later, he comes storming past us both.

Half a mile later, he's crawling along again.

I can only assume he was competitive, and was offended that we'd overtaken him. Bizarre behaviour.

Personally, I know I'm an amateur on a very average bike. I am not interested in racing people!

Happens to me every day, I start off with good intentions flying on the flat but usually end up getting scalped by everyone on inclines… I even got scalped by a sexy lady on a MTB on Friday  . The worst type are the ones fresh out of the house, you are on your last couple of miles and you can see the joy in their eyes as they scalp you, I loathe you middle aged MTB’er with ego, your mother is a goat. :B)

An SCR schoolboy error, put so much effort catching and passing someone only to run out of steam.:headshake:

He is inexperienced. Year of self-ego-boosting have led me to develop a nearly infallible technique for overtaking:
  • If you overtake someone who is clearly not able to respond, such as a 10 year old child on a BSO, just enjoy the moment.
  • If you overtake someone who might be able to respond, turn off the route as quickly as seems sensible. You have won.
  • If you overtake someone who is clearly much better than you, stop in a few yards and pull out your mobile phone. They will overtake but as you have stopped it does not count. This is a score-draw.

He seemed to be the one that decided it was a race - I was too concerened with a banging head and dehydration to even think about racing.xx(

He started slowing within about 2 mins of passing me - I would never pass a cyclist if I thought within half a mile they would pass me again.

Why not? Tis a free country... besides, over what distance does he have to make it stick, in 100km time he may have passed again and left the passee for dead.

Because he looked like a knob....

He obviously saw it as a race passing as fast as he could then struggled to stay ahead at an average pace.

Its just in some folks instincts. Recently on the Tour of Flanders, I dropped to my 28t rear for the climbs and folk would dive past and drop immediately in front and before we were a quarter up the hill they were then getting in my way  I suppose we could also aiken it to 'Must Overtake Cyclist' drivers
