Why people put their hair up and down

I go out with this lady friend for lunch and she puts her hair down. I see her later an sits up.

The same thing happens most of the time even for dinner. The only time i see it up is during bike rides.

Even my SO puts her hair down when going out and then back up when she's home.

The only thing i can think of is hair goes down when not in home territory and goes up when not out and about. Is that right?

Sometimes you want long hair out of the way if you're doing something like cleaning the bike or gardening or cooking. Sometimes you want it out of the way if it needs a wash and feels a bit grimy.

And some may think it looks more attractive loose for a lunch date

I always stick my hair in a hairband when cooking or at work or it gets in the way,

Gratuitous photo of me at 'Off The Tracks', as for the girl I have no idea, by this point I'd have been drinking for about 60hrs pretty much non-stop hence looking 'tired and emotional'

I had hair past my waist up until about 6 years ago. Having it up or down depends on what you are doing. Doing gardening or housework, cooking etc then you would want it up and out of the way.

The only time i let it down was sometimes when i went out at night. Most of the time, i kept it tied back, out of the way.

In the end, it was more hassle than it was worth, so i had it all chopped off short, although i must admit, lately i am letting it get longer again.

I chopped my hair off when I went on tour 2 years ago, no way I was carrying shampoo and stuff in my panniers!
As we are not allowed hair down at work, I kept my hair quite short ever since, much easier to style.
