Today, I wasn't involved in an accident, but the chap who was chasing me down on an upwrong was, about 10 yards behind me.

If you are going to indulge in SCR then please be careful when joining roads from cyclepaths otherwise you will end up on the way to A&E.

The cyclist collided with a car that had slowed down to allow me passage, so this time injuries were not (as far as I know) too severe, though I suspect that his bank balance will be severely impacted - v. light weight alu+carbon confection - ironically the chap works in a local bike shop and was on his way to work.

Stay safe people - cars make it bad enough on the roads without us making things worse for ourselves!

SCR can be fun if done within the rules of the road and you are both aware of what is going on around you, it can also be dangerous when people start taking silly risks.

It sounds like the other rider was concentrating on the SCR rather than the more important things such as the large metal boxes.

Last year bombing down Shelford road, Trumpington I'm doing a significant speed, close to 30mph, catching up a roadie who's going some, around 25mph, we approach the hospital access road. I'm taking the lane as I normally do & the roadie is in a reasonable secondary when a idiot just rides off the cycle path onto the cycle lane without looking. The roadie has to jink hard to his right across my path. His reaction when he heard my brakes was "OH F**K!!" as he suddenly realized I was there.

Ouch, touch wood when ever I've been drawn into a SCR I've known when to back off but the Ridgeback Velocity doesn't get drawn into many SCR and when it is its deceptive and I've dropped folk before its an issue.

SCR- I got drawn into one of those on my OCR by a CAAD a few years ago. Ego over ability. I stayed with him, but was bloody knackered by the time we stopped.

Excuse my ignorance - what is an SCR (apart from a road bike made by Giant)?

What planet have you been on - Jupiter

I only ever stick to the rules of the road - makes it more fun when you pass again. I never enter into the nutty filtering technigues to get ahead - I let the them do that, then overhaul them again when traffic clears.

don't the rules say that filtering to overtake doesn't count?

and care is to be taken at all times etc etc?

the actual rools of SCR are quite sensible

Am an occasional participant of SCR myself. Definitely has to be done with appropriate care and without ego. I'll only drop someone if it can be done convincingly; i.e. not hanging parallel or staying close behind. Also, if someone scalps me and is only marginally going faster I'll dip my speed a little to allow them room. Of course, on the commute I don't get a scalping v often ;-) A few cyclists often hand me my ass round Richmond Park though!

In my London routes though there are only a few decent stretches; one must be completely vigilant, accept being dropped now and again (there's always someone faster) and not forget that these are busy roads :-D

'hospital access road' seems like the right place to be!
