If I say morning to another cyclists while stopped at lights, sometimes they look at me as if I am a mass murderer or something

Be nice to see another cyclist on my commute, they're almost as rare as hens teeth, I don't start work until 10am but even when I was starting at 8am I didn't see many. I tend see plenty of cyclists when I'm out Sunday though, the better the weather the more I see, and most of them are friendly.

If you go rambling at the weekend people say hello to each other, but no one would dream of saying hello to everyone they walked past on the way to the office.

PS I doexchange a comment with cyclists on my commute if there is something to talk about such as a close pass or someone doing something silly, but I wont say hello to everyone. Like Gaz said I would be saying hello every 30 seconds.

I'd have to say that in my experience it's about 50/50. Some people will nod or wave back at me and some won't. I don't take it personally when someone doesn't wave or nod back. As they could have more pressing thoughts on their mind than returning another cyclists friendly gesture.

Recurring topic this innit? I'm not a great hello-er, but I'll always say hello back if someone acknowledges me. I'd never leave someone hangin' man.

I normally pass the time of day with every cyclist I pass. 99% of the time I get a response. Then again, I'm in North Yorkshire; where people still do talk to each other... Not like London You could be dead in the street down there & people would step over you...

Most of my cycling is in rural parts, so I only ever see riders who are embarrasingly slow or absurdly fast.

I never catch up with anyone doing the same speed as me, nor does anyone doing my speed ever catch me.

I find this very disappointing. I shall be writing to the Minister.

In London, the concatenation of lights and junctions on almost every route guarantees some contact with riders.

Luckily most are from the south, so I understand their greetings.

Imagine my horror when some ghastly Yorkshire type gurns a regional greeting at me and I have no idea how to respond.

When this happens, I just look fierce and ride away. I imagine I leave those chaps from the regions with the impression we'd happily ride over corpses in London. But really... one simply cannot understand a word they say.

What is one to do? Greet everybody, but do try to do so in a way that people will understand.

Mostly cycle rural roads nowadays too, although I've found the difference isn't so much that as the number of cyclists. As Gaz says, once there are 'too many', you have to stop greeting everyone. How many 'too many' to greet actually is, varies from person to person (with some, it's obviously 'any').

I'm mostly a greeting person currently, unless they are riding on the pavement.

Where I live, it is the custom that cyclists should dismount and bow to each other. As a result, it is not uncommon for a mile's journey to take an hour and a half.
