As DP says, it's really easy to cook, and will be miles better than anything bought from Lidl/Aldi.

My boyfriend, who is half Austrian, sometimes makes Weiner schnitzel (it has become a bit of a tradition for us to do it on Christmas Eve if we are visiting my parents at the time). It works fine done with pork.

French toast anyone?

I was visiting a friend in the States and asked if I wanted 'English Muffins' for breakfast.

What now?

  1. English muffins are split, crumpet like things that you find in the bread section and need a poached egg on top, as opposed to the cakey ones you find in the cake section and at starbucks.
  2. Schnitzels a hugely popular in Berlin, haven't particularly noticed them in other german cities. Beware of a DDR schnitzel, it's some sort of spam like square of pressed meat dipped in batter ... disgusting, but quite funny.
  3. Sometimes even Australians confuse themselves with Austria it seems: these stores had opened all over melbourne the last time I was there http://schnitz.com.au/

The one I had wasn't . It was pork fillet that was beautifully cooked....
A DDR was pork fillet? That's weird.

I just google DDR schnitzel, and all the links seem to point to what (my partner actually) ate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdwurst

I should apologise: it looks as though it's not a dish of shortage and poverty, but just a different sort of much loved food. Still, it was unexpected at the time. Ordering dishes you don't recognise in foreign countries is always an adventure ... Himmel und Erde was an unexpected treat somewhere along the Ruhr (one that gets elided from english menus), while a sausage salad ordered in Heidelberg was not the expect salad-with-sausage, but a plate of meat tossed in salad dressing!

The German dish I always meant to order from a restaurant I went to often, just to see what it was, but never got around to, had the English translation: Meat - Sharply! - for Vegetarians.

Get it cooked quick so you can post up a review, I love a nice schnitzel.

Once a year or so I have to go over to a place near Hildesheim for work and usually get to my hotel on a Sunday night. Soon as I've unpacked it's straight down to the bar, and no need for a menu, schnitzel and a large Krombacher please.
