Use the 'compromise' card. Get a pair of these (or similar) pedals and shoes like the ones in the link above.
Then promise just use the spd side on leisure rides until you have demonstrated to her that can actually use them without falling over all the time.
The flat side is prettty handy anyway on my utility bike as I can nip out with whatever I happen t have on my feet at the time.

or just MTFU and let her know who wears the trousers even if like me she tells you which ones to wear

And I suppose you advise her on the dangers of wearing high heel shoes and she listens

I also assume she is an experienced cyclist.

I've had more bath-mat related injuries than SPD related ones.
My only clipless moment was outside a pub, after a glass or three. I felt a bit silly...
Honestly, clipless pedals are designed to release safely.

Just get some SPD compatible shoes, and make progress from there.

Does anyone know a hard shoe (to increase efficiency) that doesnt have clip ins?

Get some MTB style shoes, eg these or these. They have fairly stiff soles (not quite as stiff as proper road shoes) but with a tread rather than a smooth sole, so you can use them on flat pedals, or even walk in them quite comfortably.

They also have a little recess where you can optionally fit cleats at a later date should it become expedient to do so.

I've had some near misses when my feet have slipped off conventional pedals. IMO - you are safer with your feet securely attached to your pedals than not attached.

You need to get used to using clipless pedals but once you have crossed that hurdle, you'd be fine.

I prefer to set the pedal release tensions low enough to be sure to be able to unclip when I need to. I don't suffer from the problem of accidentally unclipping.

Thanks everyone, there are some really useful suggestions there. Think I will go for the Shimano M077 without cleats and then work my way onto them later...

Wife is much prettier / clever / richer than me, she is definitely a keeper.

Thanks very much everyone.
