LAN =local area network. which is your wired network in your house WLAN is wireless local area network,
I've not use this one but it is plug and play so would be better for someone who doesn't know a great deal about their system

I'd say nothing that can borrow wifi from a public network can be suitable to use unless you have the like of wifi adapter that will allow you to fit an external antenna, and trail a cable to the place where you get a better signal. A wifi dongle would be a good second choice, you could get 2gb per month wifi dongle from T-mobile for a tenner. Or move to the other place where the signal is best.
