Australian police say they are treating the death of Gary Wiggins, father of British cycling champion Bradley Wiggins, as "suspicious".

Gary Wiggins, 55, a former cycling great, was found unconscious next to a road in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales.

Police have said the circumstances leading up to his death are "still to be confirmed".

The Newcastle Herald claims he either suffered a beating or a drunken fall.

The paper also claimed Mr Wiggins was estranged from his Olympic gold medallist son.

Police are awaiting the post-mortem results and have appealed for information.

A spokesman said: "The circumstances leading up to Mr Wiggins's death are still to be confirmed and his death is being treated as suspicious at this stage."

Cycling career

Mr Wiggins was discovered in the small town of Aberdeen last Friday morning after leaving a party the night before, according to the Newcastle Herald.

He died in hospital later that day.

His family in Australia believes Mr Wiggins was attacked before being left to die.

Mr Wiggins was born in Yallourn, Victoria, in 1952 and moved to Europe in the 1970s to pursue a highly successful cycling career.

He moved back to Australia when his marriage to Bradley's mother broke down.

Bradley Wiggins shot to fame after Athens 2004, where he became the first Briton to win three Olympic medals at a single Games for 40 years.

He was awarded an OBE for services to sport in the 2004 New Year's Honours List.

His wife Kath said the family was very upset and did not wish to comment.
