I imagine it's very similar to watching F1. With the real time leader board and split times on display. It would be about as exciting as that I suspect. But without the potential for crashes. I suppose there is always the danger of bonking.

I'm not sure that football is a reasonable comparison. I think an equivalent would be a cycling race on a turbo.
