For two weeks now I've been trying to decide between one of two bikes...( i know, another dilemma thread) the LBS has finally received my size in a Wilier La Triestina Mirage, £1,150. The trouble is the Izoard Xp Xenon is 'only' £350 more expensive. What it really comes down to is do I go for the Carbon frame with lesser groupset and the potential to upgrade in the future or do I go for the Alu bike with decent groupset now and save £350.

Please help,

Advice and opinions welcome

Defiantly carbon but I won't buy from shop I will get something very descent for around £1350 from eBay good condition 2nd hand. For this amount you can get very nice bike why to get warped from store? Waist of money

Carbon definitely. I have a Wilier Izoard, full carbon, it's the one up from the XP (full carbon forks and lighter frame) and it's fantastic. I also have an aluminium Cannondale and whilst this is good and probably one of the best Aluminium frames around, the Wilier is so much smoother to ride. It's true what is said that Carbon really does iron out all the road buzz and this translates into a much smoother and quicker ride. Groupset wise there really isn't much in it between the Mirage and the Xenon and as you say you can upgrade later or even a piece at a time.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I thought both Mirage and Xenon had been discontinued by Campag, and that Veloce was now their entry level groupset?

Iozard has a 'z' in it, therefore better. Go carbon if you can. Incremental differences in groupsets have less of an impact than an entire frame technology.
