Thinking of buying the Shimano 501 wheelset @ £76 for the pair, but will the Shimano 8 speed HG(Sora) 12-25 cassette fit, money is tight but if someone can suggest a better and cheaper alternative cassette please mention, i am not even sure i need a cassette, sure someone will correct me, and would i be better off getting the Shimano HG 50 chain to match it all up, my ride is a Triban 3.

If the wheel has a Shimano/SRAM freehub body as opposed to a Campag one, it should take your Sora cassette. As for the chain, any 8 spd chain will suffice, no need to go with a Shimano chain, in fact, I would actively seek an alternative brand, KMC for example.

Do you mean the cassette that's on the bike already would go on the Shimano wheel.

If you have a Shimano or SRAM drivetrain with a Shimano or SRAM cassette you need to buy a wheel that is Shimano/Sram compatible, these are equivalent. If you have a Campag drivetrain or cassette you need a wheel that is Campag compatible.

If you already have a cassette, you can take it off the wheel you currently have and put it on the new wheel.

I was thinking of getting a new cassette for the new wheel as the Tribans original one has not got consistent teeth on it as it cheaply made and keeping it as is for a spare.

Well then buy whatever 8 spd cassette you want from Shimano or SRAM's offerings and then buy any wheel with a Shimano/SRAM freehub body and you are good to go. If changing cassette do also change chain, as the old worn chain will potentially speed up wear on the new cassette. It is fairly good practice to have a chain for each cassette you use and keep them together.

Hi Andrew.....
interesting post - and yes - any Shimano compatible 8 speed cassette should do the job (famous last words).
I take yr point about the one fitted to the T3 being cheap. It's a cheap bike!^_^.......but I,ve just eyeballed mine and, apart from the slightly irregular teeth that help the chain climb up and down I don't see any glaring problems. The chainset however has teeth like that singer in The Pogues!,
Does your drivetrain shift (reasonably) quietly and to order? Ultegra it ain't!

Thats a good analogy, teeth like the singer in the pogues, yes they are like that, there not bad for changing up and down obviously the going up to a bigger cog is a bit noisy. Now cybernight got me worried, i opened a new thread to find out the difference between the above and the 30mm model as thats what i ordered just hope the not sent them yet.
