Will this live to suck from the carpet again?

Will it ever work again?

My 8 year old, low mileage Dyson DC14 went out in a puff of smoke yesterday.
Rather than part with £150 or thereabouts for a replacement, I decided to investigate:

The motor (out of picture, in kitchen!) brushes look to be the culprit. One of them is worn down to the housing.
A replacement pair of brushes can be had for about a tenner; but am I wasting my time? It looks as if there may have been a minor fire in the motor and it doesn't smell very pleasant. I suspect that if I ever get it running with all the bits put back together, that the smell will result in a trip to a skip. Worth a try though.....

Update... Ended up buying a complete replacement motor from my friendly LDS in Glasgow. £45 plus £5 for a new filter and an hour spent snapping it back together again (was James Dyson a Lego fan?) and it runs good as new. That's about £100 saved that can be better spent - possibly on Wiggle or ChainReaction!

If you drop a stone and a feather inside your dyson - will they both hit the bottom at the same time?

I'd risk it.
