IIRC we paid £150 a couple of years ago for my solicitors to update our wills.

I'm VERY pleased you are not DIYing yours. My family history has two completely separate horror stories regarding self written wills. One was solved after the whole family went to a solicitor, and each one paid, to set aside the badly worded will. The other saw a decent legacy hung up for 20 years by a stupid clause. By the time the will was resolved the legal fees were nearly 90% of the estate.

... And one advantage of making a Will is that it stops people having to write to everyone in town if they don't know whether you did or not.

the other being... it's a regular flow of income for those in the legal profession.

Of course - just as garages 'rip off' people who don't service their own cars. And I gave it as a reason for making a Will rather than relying in the intestacy rules, not a as a reason for getting a solicitor to draft the Will for you.
Anyway, most high street firms do straightforward Wills at not much above cost. It's to get you in the door, like supermarkets selling two litres of milk for £1.

We made one when the kid was born nineteen years ago. We were in the solicitor's office for about 30 minutes explaining what we wanted, and she wrote it up subsequently. I think it cost £50, not a huge sum of money, even in those days.
