So the wife came back from a shopping spree this afternoon with a new laptop.
We were desperate for one as our current laptop is an antique and runs XP which doesn't seem to support much anymore.
This new one has windows 8.1 but a free upgrade to Windows 10 is available. However I have heard and read that this can slow the laptop down.
Can anyone give me any feedback as to how good windows 10 is and if it's worth the upgrade. I think I can upgrade free anytime up until next June or July.
Thanks

You can revert back to W8.1 if you don't gel with 10. Some prefer it, some don't.

If you want to put some life into your old m/c install Linux Mint on it. It won't run much Windows software but there's plenty of free software for most of what people do.

Just got new lappie and '10' is good for me. Took yonks to download/update (it was an upgrade).

No glitches, no slow-ness it just works.

I do like the configurable start menu and everything is easy to lay out neatly which appeals to my slightly obsessive sense of neatness.

I like the Edge browser too. Browsers are much of a muchness as far as I'm concerned but this looks modern and works fine too.

All our prog's work fine on it too - Office 13, Photoshop, Sage Line 50 and all my leisure/music utilities.

upgraded my 8 to 10 within days of 10 coming out.

apart from 10 seeming to regress the lappy back to it's Swedish keyboard, language, and OS install, roots (long story) if anything it is faster.

Slightly faster, more stable. Had a few odd glitches to iron out, had to re-enter a few license keys for some reason but once done and settled, it's working better. And I used a local account and switched off all the Cortana crap and online integration.

I have been trying it on my laptop. I can't really find anything at all worth bothering with, than what Windows 7 offers. It looks a little prettier, it makes nice little noises, looks a bit like the dashboard on my Xbox One, it gives more irritating messages and offers to do things I really couldn't care less about. Its also marginally slower and my laptop is no slouch. I've had issues with my touchpad also. So I'm going back to Windows 7, I'm not bothered about flashy GUI or noises. Windows 7 has been rock solid on all my PC's so I can't see a need.

I thought Windows XP was a good operating system, but Windows 7 had the added improvement of offering hardware acceleration, which made a big difference when using XBMC (now Kodi). Hence it was a worthwhile upgrade, and I found Windows 7 to be more stable and more secure.. But for somebody like myself with no touch-screen windows devices I just don't see the point at all at the moment to bother with 10. Everybody to their own though.

Windows 10 zips along on both laptops here. One with an i5 and the other with i3 processor.I have no regrets installing 10.
Just remember to go into the privacy settings and turn everything off.
