Windows 7 Icon Problem

I've been tidying up my desktop due to having an icon overload, and although I now have only 3 icons on it, when I search my desktop, (for example to upload a photo), and I click desktop, it shows 55 items listed, a couple of file folders, (these are visible on the desktop), a few system folders, (not visisble) and a load of photos I've previously saved, (not visible on desktop either),

Has anyone else come across, does anyone know how to fix it, or is it going to be another annoyance that pushes me ever closer to buying a Mac!

[EDIT] PS: When I right click the desktop and goto view, 'Show Dektop Icons' is ticked

I would suggest downloading and running a program such as ccleaner. It is free and works extremely well.

Just a guess but it sounds as though their is a cache file holding old data about the desktop content. ccleaner is great at getting rid of such files. I may well be wrong as I have not used Windows 7 but the basic concept behind all Windows OS's from 95 onwards is pretty similar.
you have lost me , how will ccleaner sort the problem ???

open an explorer window (windows explorer not internet explorer)
click on tools at the top (hit alt if its not shown) then choose folder options
click on the tab marked view.
put a dot in "Show hidden files, folders and drives"
click on ok.
minimise your windows using the button in the bottom right or the windows +D key together and have a look whats on there.

Thanks Melon, tried that but still nothing. I'm no IT expert but I followed what you suggested, and I did have to click on the dot to show "Show hidden files, folders or drives", but still nothing.

I re-started my PC to see if that made a difference but it hasn't. It's not something that really bothers me, but when I see the apparent content of my desktop, yet I know it's not there it just winds me up TBH.

I hate computers

[EDIT] Sorted it the old fashioned way. Made a note of all the file names, searched them and deleted them. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.
