It's fine on my 3 machines running Windows 7. Two running home and one running Pro.

No problems, no obvious benefits in day to day use.

Although if you take an image (or slipstream) with a service pack installed, it saves installing every previous update and there are a good few hundred megabytes of those for Win7.

Most of the updates included in sp1 should already have been included in various 'updates' already.

The SP1 is normally only of use when installing a machine from scratch (all updates in one place already downloaded) or if you are creating a slipstream disk ready to install a machine from scratch.

As far as I am aware, there are no extra applications or anything that people will notice after applying it.
