If you know the name or part of the name of the file you're looking for again just use the search, hit windows key and start typing the filename and on the top right click the 'files' and itll show your matches. The search feature has been pretty good for this in both 7 and 8.I'm not the most computer literate to begin with, the Windows 8 thing has thrown me.
Things like downloading files and photo's, I cant work out where things have gone.
Hit the windows key and type 'downloads' and it *should* find your default downloads folder almost instantly. Or in windows explorer (windows key+E), navigate to c:\users\<username>\downloads probably just like you would in win7

If you pin a folder/windows explorer to the task bar (at the bottom of the desktop), by right clicking and selecting you can just click that and then onto 'my pictures' or whatever when you want to access files.
The learning curve is pretty steep, but you should have it all figured out pretty soon, just stay away from those evil tiles
