Windows Midia Player Problem

A question for those of you who know a bit about fixing computers... i.e. everyone who uses Windows!

Trying to watch videos from my cool new cycle computer and on Windows Media Player I get no sound. What I do get is:

error message C00D10D1

and a little note telling me I'm missing a codec for playing sound from that type of file. Drew a total blank on the codec but a few places mentioned that cleaning the registry would sort this. When I tried to find programs that did this it was a pain in the neck and both mysteriously went from being free trials to requiring a credit card half was through installation :0(

Any of you chimps been here and done that?

Can't help you but I don't like Media Player. Can't you use something else?

Look in the options I think somewhere there's is something you tick to auto download any codecs you need.

I'm with Rigid Raider on this one. Use something else - WMP is good for nothing. Download VLC and don't look back.

Try jamming a sharpened pencil in each ear.
It wont make WMP work but at least you wont wonder why you can't hear any more.

DivX Player is ace - will play anything.

You need to download ac3filter which should sort your problem

i downloaded the k lite codec pack top watch dvds on wmp.
it may work for what you want, it has a media player of sorts in it.

download videolan,

free, and just works

no more problems

did you know media player stores details of everything you watch and play and from what source and then sends the details to MS,

and if you aren't on the net at the time it waits till the next time you connect and then sends it.

What kind of video file are you trying to play?

No idea. It's the film taken by the ATC-2K if that helps?

VLC sounds ideal, thank you :0) I absolutely don't like very much Microsoft Squishyware so happy not to use it. I was trying to use Quicktime but let's be honest, Apply are a pain in the cheeks too.

sneaky barstewards thats why I turn all those things off.

Its easy.
go START, RUN, type in `msconfig' then OK
you'll see a window come up called `system configuration utility'

select STARTUP folder then untick all the programs you do not need stating up when you boot like office and nero and your printer and all the other stuff.
The only things you'll need are your modem router and anti virus and firewall.
Then select APPLY and OK and close it down.
Next time you boot you'll boot a lot faster and if you get a message about changed configuration just tick the `don't remind me again' box and close the window job done.
This should stop a lot of these programs running in the background hogging CPU and memory and prevent them dialling home

Whilst you are there select BOOT.INI and on the right there is a box with 30 seconds in it. alter it to 3 seconds and you will boot to windows even faster.
Don't alter anthing else unless you really know what you are doing or you'll be in a `world of woe'
