Desktops and laptops aren't like phones, which do go obsolete in a few years.

My 'new' PC has an older motherboard than my old PC and it will upgrade to W11 when i get round to it. My laptop must be 15 years old and i didn't expect that to take W10, but it did

The main difference is that W11 can only* be installed on certain spec devices and older ones will very likely fail so cannot be updated.

*There are workarounds but these require a certain amount of technical knowhow. There are also risks of this method as it only bypasses the install requirements but may cause problems in the future if Microsoft choose to be awkward.

Nah, W10 had a pretty low bar for what it would run on. If you were already running W7, pretty much guaranteed W10 would run on your PC.
