but if you have auto/rain sensing wipers don't apply it to the sensor areas or they really don't work

I have always used "conventional style" wiper blades, with varying degrees of success. Mostly they worked OK for a few days then started to smear/squeak annoyingly.
So I bought some of the new fangled silicon style blades (Tesco own make at £4 each) and so far I am very pleased with them. Very little noise or juddering or smearing and they shift the water very well. It's a thumbs up from me......

I tried installing windscreen wipers once, but then realised they didn't work too well, perhaps because my usual vehicle of choice doesn't have a windscreen. 
So now, when it rains, I just let the water fall where it may...

I'm using ancient technology. If I put rain repellent stuff in my eyes there would be other more serious problems.
Spent a jolly 20 mins scrubbing with neat Fairy Liquid. No squeaks now and I've never known my windscreen to be so clear (well it was when it was new I suppose). Probably operator error in all this - I don't clean my car hardly at all - it's an F'n car isn't it?. I'm usually either riding my bike or washing it. Trouble is I'm running up and down the M5/M6 as my mother is on her last legs and it does rain up there (and around Manchester). Had a look at the train option. Looks OK.
