You know it's bad when you are pedalling hard DOWN a hill just to get to 19mph, not 30

Yep, doing that for half the trip in this morning, which (if the wind doesn't change in the next 9 hours) means half the trip back will be a sail and then a headwind heading uphill up the next valley .

Still, better than getting stuck in the traffic queuing up for "The Game" .

Me too Potsy, it was a 1 in 5, 1 forward 5 to the right. I found myself leaning over into the wind just to keep a straight course. This morning was straight into the wind. Bloody knackered now.

Not so nice in this morning - cross-winds were too frequent to hit good speed, but still did reasonably well.

Not too sure how the trip home is going to be. It is so windy that they have removed the flags from the flag poles, so don't know if the wind has veered at all.

I do not understand who the wind works, it always seems to be a head wind or crosswind, never a tail wind. It's the same in the morning as it is in the evening! How can that be? If I have to suffer a headwind on the way in why is there a headwind when I go in the opposite direction 8 hours later?

Perfect day yesterday - bit of a breeze in the morning, but blown north up Blackpool seafront all the way home - cruising at 26-28mph without breaking into a sweat, home in 32 minutes instead of the usual 45. Trips like that happen pretty rarely, and I did feel sorry for the poor sods going south (granny ring weather). resorted to a bike with an engine today though...

Commute to work had me pedalling hard downhill, normally achieve about 26mph, but only 10 in the wind.

Some very nasty sidewinds nearly had me off, but when I eventually got the wind behind me it was great!

I had one point when a gust just literally stopped me and as I stopped it also blew over the bins at the side of the road. I also experienced the joy of having to pedal hard to make progress downhill!! Later on I was on the Portway (the bit that doesn't have a path running along side) and after two lorries came very close at 50 mph and given the wide open road allowing me the full force of the wind, I decided that the path was the safer option today. (I was going to argue my case for the road being unsafe in the current conditions if stopped). The only who commented was an ambulance driver stopped by someone's house that I gave way to who said I was mad to be out today.

Another day pedalling downhill at the sea. This time with added rain. Did anyone esle find the wind gustier today than yesterday? I almost got blown off (the bike Fnarr) twice on exposed sections, and there's a lot of me to dislodge

30mph with 40mph gusts this morning around here. Hard work going in, not so bad coming back! I was roasting when I got to work - normally I try not to cycle too hard on my commute so I don't arrive hot and bothered, but today I wouldn't have moved otherwise!

Blown all over the road today on the way home, luckily the worst part was on a single track road with nothing about or i would have been under someones wheels .

On the positive side think of the workout your getting for free !!

Being low down and on three wheels means sidewind gusts are not a problem.

But one headwind gust almost stopped me dead.

And I ended up doing ~6 mph flatout passed Sywell airport, I'm normally doing ~15 mph on that strech of road.

My current work location is a few miles away from the England side of the 1st Severn Bridge and I have set myself a rule that if it's closed completly due to high winds I don't ride in (I don't have to cross it as I come to work from Bristol but I've tried it a few few times and have been blown across the road). Looking at the state of the bike shed thing at around 11am today I'm glad I didn't ride in and park my bike there.
