I'm planning on getting a new shed, so I can get a dedicated commuter (boardman cx), then a really nice road bike. Upgrade the group set on the Allez for days when I don't want to use the really good road bike. Retire the Viking (maybe with the group set from the Allez) to a relative. Keep the old (but good) hard tail MTB for assorted use.

Now what was the question again?

I've got 2:

Road/CX/tourer - used for any rides that are mainly on the road
Mountain bike - used to messing around on the trails

We've just got rid of 2 cheap MTBs, although I did want to keep one of them to put guards and a rack on, and use it for riding to the shops. My OH had to point out to me that we live in the middle of town, and it takes less than 2 minutes to walk to the shops.

Thanks for the replys. I'd better start looking for a bike
I will pop into the local bike shop at weekend and see if he has any part ex bikes that have come in.

Now I just have to explain to the her indoors on why I need 2 bikes, she is already complaining about the cycling clothes that seem to be multiplying:addict:

Ridgeback hybrid(full mudguards & panniers).Used for commute on wet and iffy days or if i have a lot to take to work.Giant defy (no mudguards)or much else really for better weather.

More or less exactly the same - but I don't commute. And after a ride on my Defy with my daughter yesterday on her new Trek TT bike, I'll not be using the Defy again until there's been a few days of dry weather. Chain etc was clean when we went out. Didn't rain but roads appalling with mud dragged from the verges by tractors and trucks. Chain when I got back was covered in a black, abrasive slurry. Complete drivetrain strip and clean ensued. It's the Ridgeback now until the weather improves. You definitely need 2 bikes, minimum.

Go secondhand and go unsexy, but go for quality and simplicity. Early, rigid MTB by Kona, Marin and similar. Or a shopping bike. Single chainring to keep it simple. Scruffy paint.

Bizarrely, if you get it so simple as to have only one gear, the price a vendor wants will increase. That's fashion.

Good luck and have fun.

What? A comment without riddle from Boris. That's a turn up for the books.

Yes, I have more than one bike and one of them is a hackbike to go down to the shops/ride with the kids in the park.
I'd loathe to lose it, but if I had a choice it'd be the one I'd let go off first.

Funnily enough I have now started riding a road bike.

With skinny slick tyres and no mudguards I stay a heck of a lot drier than with my 'chuck everything up' hybrid, even with its mudguards

Tis a shame the roadbike is a strait jacket for route choice.

As one can see from my signature, I have quite a few bikes. At present the old Claud Butler MTB has come into its own in the snow, so that's seeing quite a lot of use. The recumbent trike is on a turbo trainer. The Dahon folder is my usual bike for commuting and Bikeability work, as it is so easy to put in the car. The Scott is hibernating for winter. The Moulton tandem gets used when I go out with my lad. The two-wheeled recumbent is my project, and currently being tweaked to suit me; I suspect it will become my bike of choice for longer rides as it is so comfortable. That leaves the Decathlon Fitness 3, which is also laid up for winter as it has no mudguards and lots of shiny components that I don't want to see corroded. Apart from the Scott, all the bikes have some sort of rack made by Topeak which enables me to slot on one of my rackpacks with unfolding panniers. The Topeak bags mean that the bikes can all be used for commuting and shopping and are one of my most versatile pieces of kit. I now seem to have a bike for most purposes, but to be honest I think I really do need a 29er MTB.

I have 2 for best and one for winter. I'm glad I do considering the weather we've had recently. Would not want my other two getting in the mess my Peugeot Altitude is in at the moment!
