Ice is another big no-no for me, only lost 2 or 3 days to it last year. If it's not too bad, I'll walk the bike to the main road, where it's well gritted. But then the rest of my route can be done on high traffic roads. Side roads/country lanes are lethal.

Just not worth the potential for a nasty injury, that will keep you off the bike longer. One winter I fell off 3 times in one trip to work, one was at about 30 mph, on a main road, going in a straight line, front wheel just went.......fortunately no following cars or I would have been a gonner. Two other crashes soon followed this one on the back lanes.... Got to work, black and blue, covered in mud, clothing shredded.....

Take it easy on icy days.

Oh and another thing I remember from when I was commuting in the snow/ice when I twas young! 20 years ago now!

I always used to go round corners with the back brake on so that if I slid, then the back wheel would go first.

I was certainly tougher in those days, falling off was just a bot of a laugh really, not now though!
