It's that time of year again when a day or two of rain makes us realise that the nights will soon draw in and we'll be in full on winter mode. This is my third year of winter commuting and I made quite a few kit mistakes before I got to the kit list I now have. Last year I commuted all winter other than the really snowy days.

Here's my budget kitlist - feel free to add to it as most people here have many more winters under their belts than I do.

Head & Face - I have a baseball cap to keep rain water off my specs and a couple of buffs I picked up in TK Maxx. The buffs are great, you can wear them as a beany or cover your face like a rioter. They can go under your helmet straps and you can even wear two.

Body - I have a montaine featherlite velo for light showers and wind, and an Altura night vision softshell for really cold days. I've given up finding a waterproof that doesn't make me sweat so I just get wet and wear quick drying fabrics. Under that I either wear a lidl longsleeve top, or if it's really cold a longsleeve top with a shortsleeve summer jersey over the top. Even in freezing temperatures I was always warm enough in this combo. The winter cycling kit is in lidl this week, go buy some.

legs. I bought some Sports Direct padded longs which I wear under baggy shorts.

Feet - lidl cycling socks over Trek SPD shoes. This year I'm going to give shoe covers a go, any tips?

Rucksack - a friend bought me a dayglo flashing pack cover last week so I'm rather looking forward to giving that a go.

Gloves - I have some specialised thin mountain biking gloves, I tried on some thicker Altura winter gloves but I worry about grip on the bars.

The bike - I keep my 25mm Bonty all weathers one, I'm thinking about Marathon plus this year but will see how I go. I've also fitted my SKS clip on guards which have just enough clearence on my trek pilot....

Lights - I've got a Hope 1 and blackburn flea on the bars with a fenix ld20 on my helmet. On the back I've got a cateye ld600 and a 1watt smart. Plus the flashy rucksack cover. Powerwise the whole lot is powered by hybrid batteries which I try to keep half charged over the summer.

That kit list got me throgh the last two winters and other than a altura jacket (the other one is falling apart after two winters), I'm ready for anything. I may try some bib longs this winter but only if i find a bargain.

Here are some bib longs at bargain price. I bought some of their bib shorts last year and find them excellent value. I bought some bib longs from Aldi last year and can't complain about them either. I don't commute but do ride weekends in the winter.

I've added a skull cap in the last year which I like when it's proper cold/wet, it keeps the head proper cosy, which you underestimate until you get it, a buff around the neck and lower head is good too

otherwise, longs, perhaps a base layer under a ss/LS top, perhaps a gillet

a NV top for only freezing cold weather or torrential rain, even then a ss top under that is still a bit bloody hot

suspect my winter gloves won't see out this winter, 2 years old now and getting rather unwaterproof

ooo and some part merino socks with overshows and the regular summer shows keeps my highly chilly feet warm enough for an hour's commute, all about the socks, I experimented with winter boots that were neither warm or waterproof

lights i run all year round, might fit an extra rear in case, my best two both fit to the seatpost which is annoying, I've got two that fit to the back of the rack but the mounts are suspect and need extra securing which is irritating when I want to recharge them

My winter commuting kit:
Lidl cycling gloves (£7.99)
Lidl sports glasses (£7.99)
Some cheap balaclava mask thing I got off Skirlington Market (£3, but it works if it's cold)
Cheap Matalan raincoat thing (Keep it in my panniers, just in case... £15 two years ago)
Cheap cardigan thing from Matalan (Surprisingly windproof, £4 in a summer sale)
Work trousers (£12)

Depending on the weather, I use the Galaxy with Marathon Plus' on (700x32) or my Go-Kart Quadricycle with 6" wide wheels (Depends how snowy/icy it is).

Just a quick update. The Lidl bibslongs look very warm and pretty well made, I bougt some last night for £9.99, they'll only be used on zerio ish days.

They do, but when I tried them on I found them to be a very weird fit. Maybe it's because I'm used to figure-hugging, multi-panelled bib longs and the Lidl ones are one-panel and the XL size appears to have been designed for short, skinny-legged Germans with big beer-guts!

The XL silver & white long-sleeved top, on the other hand, fits very well indeed - as do the size 9.5 gloves

Some stuff here better avoided

Montane Featherlite keep the rain out for about 10 minutes, they are utterly useless for any time of year, doubly so in winter
Rucksacks should not be used. Saddlebags should
SKS clip on guards give almost no coverage. Crud Roadracers or proper SKS guards are vastly better and cheaper

I don't bother with rain protection, I'm hard (and sweat) so just get wet anyway. Montaine is only for wind cheaterness....

I've found the SKS's to be all right but not compared them to roadracers so I'll have to take your word for it, are they a pain to fit?

I have some of those Crudracers - Well part of them after the end rattled off because of those stupid screws. I had just replaced 2 sets as they just seem to rattle off and I only ride for 20 mins at a time !

You forgot the 'imho' at the end of that statement...

I've been riding with a rucksack (originally a North Face on the MTB, now a Deuter Race EXP Air on the roadie) and I'm perfectly happy with it. It's even handier in Winter, as I get to pop a Creative Reflectives cover over it and attach another rear light to its LED loop!

Each to their own; rucksack, saddlebag, panniers or trailer - it's all a mattter of personal preference.

In between here and there
I hate saddle bags, much prefer a decent ruck sack, Safddlebags I always used to put tooo much in, much more selective with a rucksack also didn't enjoy the weight over the back wheel, each to their own
