Now winter is almost over I have decided I want to do something with my winter hack mtb.

I like the idea of simplicity in a single speed bike but what I want to know is changing the drivetrain from a triple to a single will I need to change the BB & what wheels would you recommend? (Need new wheels anyway)

I'm saving roughly £30 a week & have about £150 saved so far.

Thanks in advance

If you just want to experience a single freewheel, just remove all the gear cables, the front and rear mechs and shorten the chain. Keep the triple and the rear cassette and experiment with the different combinations you can get, to get the best gear ratio for the type of roads you ride. You can do all this for zero cost. When you know the combinations you want, you can start changing the chain set etc, but it will be fiddly and might cost more than you imagine.

If you save your pennies a bit more, you can buy a brand new fixed bike for less than £400.

But a nice fixed wheel bike is a real exhilarating experience.

Good luck with whatever you decide
