I had my thinner gloves on for the first time as we head to winter. I didn't wear a buff but my ears were a little cool.

The trick with winter is to layer up, and to think about your distance and speed. When I did a shorter distance and had more junctions I didn't warm up as much as I do, now I do a longer distance when I keep moving more. And you need to set off a little cool otherwise you soon overheat.

Are these still available anywhere?
Meant to replace my old ones but never got around to it, when I looked in the usual places the other day they seemed to be discontinued.
Here you go, google shy cat ;)
If I don't get any then my plan is to wear my usual summer tights with some Aldi base layer longs underneath for exxtra warmth.

Op is riding in the wee hours, I slowly layer up as needed but by the point it starts to ice up and in which case I'll take the train I'd be in bib longs, overshoes, winter socks, and base layer, slightly furry LS top, perhaps gillet and if it really is foul I might wear the Nightvision top but its so bloody warm I usually regret it

I have no intention of being stupid, having seen one of my colleagues laast year fall of both his MTB and Road bike within 250yrds of his house due to ice, I have no intention of cycling in icy conditions, especially given that there is water running across the road on 3-4 occasions on my route.

Can anyone point me to a good reasonably priced bib thingy watsit?

For the bottom half I wear a pair of Karrimor running tights from Sports direct Currently £ 7.50 a pair. Neoprene overshoes are an excellent weapon in the winter armoury.

IMHO the key thing in riding in the winter is to keep warm rather than worrying about staying dry and the best way of doing this is with layers, Merino as a base layer is an excellent investment.

Spiked tyres are the answer there, brilliant on ice if a little slow and heavy.

No padding then? Tempted to try a pair of these over my bib shorts as they are dirt cheap!

Tenn are good for me, good big sizes for the larger gents amongst us. Available from Amazon uk.
This morning, bit of a chill in the air, plus lots of downhills on the way to work.. so..
Canterbury base layer top, DHB bib tights, dhb lightweight socks, tenn long-sleeved jersey, tenn gilet, dhb skullcap, sealskin gloves, pair of lightweight footy shorts.
The skullcap came off after 5 minutes, too hot, although my ears were freezing when i got to work.
Was worried I'd overdone it, but was just nice and warm all the way in... however, a mid afternoon uphill ride home will see the base layer and gilet ditched.

25th September Aldi will be selling their winter cycling kit once more. VFM I think it's pretty unbeatable. I am using a winter long sleeve jersey at the moment which is three years old or so, what with the cold mornings. Winter softshell jackets are pretty good IMHO as are their gloves. I use ski gloves when it gets below freezing though.
