Lights x 2 on the front and rear.

Usually wear arm and ankle bands too. They may be on sale again for a few quid in the Aldi special offers a week on Thursday.

Most cycling kit these days automatically comes with reflective bits and bobs.

Good lights and most of my clothes including shoes have a few bits of reflective piping. I wear mainly black however as high viz doesn't do anything in the dark as previously stated.

I have a reflective chequed band around my helmet, reflective strips on the back of my cycle shoes (the stick on ones), and on my pannier, and some of my clothing has good reflective strips that it came with or that I've added such as on my rain jacket, but often I'm just wearing what I'm wearing that day. I also (I like reflectives) have strips on my wheels and frame which light up nicely when light hits them. My fav are the black reflective strips on my pedals which show the movement nicely.

I also have a couple of good lights front and back. Overkill ones really, then I like torches.

Nightvision jacket when its below 2-3 degrees and some very blinding rear lights, Great for my night commute on the dark roads round here.

There's a recent Australian study (http://eprints.qut.edu.au/47281/) that found that reflective bands at the knee and ankle were most effective (more effective than lights IIRC!).

Lidl spoke reflectors are excellent, but of course don't work so well from directly behind.

If you're considering reflective bands, be aware that they are not all equal. I tested a snap band given away by Sustrans against an old velcro one that uses Reflexite material and whilst they look similarly bright in daylight, the latter was much more reflective. There's actually an EU standard (EN13356) for this kind of thing and most cheap bands won't meet it. One of the few I've found that do is http://www.clasohlson.com/uk/Asaklitt-Reflective-Snap-Band/34-9146
