Winter (snow) Commuting

+ 1 for scwalbe snow stud. But only really worth it if we have a winter like the last one.

Snow studs back on MTB, tag-a-long mount removed for winter and clip on rear guard fitted. Forecast is somewhat cold tonight - probably OK with the road bike yet though. I find it's my local roads that don't get gritted, so it's a walk to the main road if no studs, and I have a nice 'alternative' off road scenic commute for the MTB, avoiding most main roads.

I got them for riding on the road and not coming off on unexpected ice...they do that job perfectly

Excellent - that's exactly the circumstances I plan to use my Marathon Winters for.

What pressure do you run them at?

I also use Marathon Winters for unexpected ice. I have them on my bike now.

When ice is not expected (but could happen) I run them at maximum pressure which is 90psi.

Last winter on ice and packed snow I ran them at 60psi. The range is very large in terms of pressure for this tyre and dictates how many studs are in contect with the road (there are always some studs in contact!).

I road on the snow and ice last winter on armadillo semi slicks, had a couple of back wheel slides but as long as you balance the bike well and keep the brake's covered you'll be fine.

I'm undecided as to whether it's too soon to start using them. On the other hand, I don't want to leave it too late and find out the hard way that I should have fitted them sooner...
