I got mine from Decathlon for about £15. They seem ok but Im sure the instructions said something along the lines of "not for professional use, cable inners will be OK, but cutting the outers should be occasional"
I have done a good few outers and they seem OK.

EDIT: looks like the price has gone up a few kwid and the handles have gone from blue to red.

Any branded ones will be fine. Avoid anything from Range and things like B&Q's own brand stuff. Cheap ones will just get dented on the jaws from the first use, and then you might as well chew the cables apart with your teeth.

I bought Pro Bike Kit own brand ones in the sale for about £7 at the start of the year and they've been great. They don't seem to have them on the website at all at the moment so don't know if they've stopped doing them or just don't have them in stock for the moment.

I use RS side cutters. when i cut outers i pus a small piece of inner inside to help stop deformation. but thats the engineer in me that makes me do that. my Knipex that i used day in day out for 10 years on site do a good job too. but if work say you have to have a new set of LV tools for every new site then who am I to argue.

Good idea using a scrap bit of inner cable, Why didnt I think of that? bound to reduce the distortion.Only just replaced all mine so hopefully wont get to try out the tip for a good while..

I second the PBK cutters rock solid.

I got some Park tool ones.A bit pricy but look solid and cut very cleanly.

Park Tools for bikes is like saying Snap On tool for cars. I do love the stuff but you certainly do need deep pockets. That said, they are designed for professional use after all, so like most things in life, you get what you pay for I suppose.

If it's a tool I use often I'll think about investing in the Park Tool version, but for most tools that I may only use now and then, or something that isn't subjected to high stresses on a regular basis, I find a decent make does the job just as well and saves (quite) a few quid along the way.

I was so gutted when some anonymous borrower ruined my Suntour cable cutters by trying to get through a spoke with them.

I use Park, though they're a bit agricultural around the jaws which makes them difficult to get in tight spots.

Shi**no makes a good pair if you can find them.

Cutting outers with the inner still in puts undue strain on the jaws I reckon. Much better to use a jibber to clean up the freshly cut end. And a file if you want to get all OCD on it.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Halfords Bikehut one? I need access to one by tomorrow and they are only place that is open, I need to get the cable replaced tomorrow as I have to go to work on Monday.

I don't know how Knipex compare on price but they are fine tools, professional workshop quality, i have no qualms about using then at work (engineering)
i got a pair of Knipex cable cutters a few weeks ago at a car boot. 50p, they look well used but still cut inners as cleanly as the day they'd have been new. Havn't tried to do any outers with them mind.

Just had a lookee at what exact model mine are...

 £37...ok so the return springs missing on mine, but im even more pleased with them now

I must get a decent pair of cutters. At the cheaper end of the scale, I got a pair of end cutters from Aldi which do a pretty good job on inners and outers. Not sure how long they'll last but they were only 2.99.
