I don't use the XP firewall, but the one in the Kaspersky package. The 'network attack blocker' in Kaspersky had set the status of the workgroup network to blocked despite my having set it to trusted status in the firewall settings. For some reason - don't know why or how - it didn't block traffic within the wired or wireless parts of the LAN, only when it crossed that boundary. The printer is addressed only by its IP address so it was still accessible.
As a result the Kaspesky firewall was blocking the traffic.
There must have been something which upset the Kaspersky system or the problem could have come when the Kaspersky software upgraded itself when I renewed the subscription, as it had done the change on all 3 computers. Setting the workgroup back to a trusted network and removing it from the blocked list has restored normality, whether it stays that way remains to be seen.
