Wireless backup thingies

I used to use Mozy worked great, although I stopped using it last week as they have removed the unlimited plan and the amount of data I back up would cost a fortune. I think they still offer a free 2gig service which is probably good enough for most peoples emails and docs (not pics & music though)

I have switched to Crashplan as they still have unlimited accounts, but also, if you don't want to backup to their servers the software is free and allows you to backup between a few of your own computers or even your friends - nice touch - I use this to backup GF's mac laptop to my desktop. They offer a 30 day free trial to their online backup service.

Netgear sell NAS boxes with between 1 and 4 tb of storage. The box also has Acronis which will backup the laptop with a schedule. Acronis backs up with a G-F-S so once a month it will do a complete backup, the other backups will just be the changes

what is a GFS?

Grandfather- father-son as in sons are daily, fathers weekly and grandfathers monthly. This on the basis of having multiple media such as tapes which you cycle through so for that scheme there would be 6 sons, 3 fathers and 1 grandfather (the last in a cycle gets promoted so the 7th son becomes the father).

The actual scheme is more a case of one full backup a month and iterative (as in changes since the last backup) ones during the month.

Generally wireless backup is via a wired ethernet drive attached to your router/modem or a wireless switch somewhere else in the house. Unless you fancy taking an old PC and installing microsoft WHS or FREENAS and using it as a file server instead.

Look at the Netgear Ready NAS duo. Or possibly the HP Proliant server (note the £100 cashback as HP are getting rid of it)

Borderline unless you have the old pc as server option but then they tend to be bulky.
You'll get the NAS equivalent of a USB drive for about £70 to £80 for the Iomega or Buffalo.
Or there are some cheap usb to nas adapters but they look iffy.
You could try Pogoplug as that's going cheap at the moment though of course you'll end up with a
nest of cables.

You can get a Buffalo Linkstation NAS with a 1Terabyte Harddisk installed for about 60quid - As Ian says, plug it into your wifi router and access it from anywhere you can get wifi in the house. I always had good experiences with Buffalo kit too.

The Linkstations are on offer - I picked up a 500gb for £30. I connected an External Hard Drive to it as it has USB port and acts as a backup to the NAS and backups to the Hard Drive daily.

Well it was a few weeks ago. The 1TB is pretty cheap though (£39.99 isn't it ?)
