I snapped this picture while stopped at a railway crossing, it was on a Wolsely van.

I must say, I found the message a bit confusing. I had previously assumed that all vehicles may turn left, is it in fact a special privilege that only the bearers of this sticker have? Or is it a warning that bikes may turn left? Is it banning bikes from sharing the road with this van? I wish I had asked the driver, now I'll never know.

It is a warning for idiot cyclists who undertake large vehicles as they approach a junction. It should of cause be on the rear of the vehicle and is as much use on the side as an ashtray on a motorbike.

I was being obtuse. Do you not think that signs like this set an aggressive tone towards all cyclists? The majority aren't thick, and the minority who are won't read the sign anyway. It's about as friendly as all of us having a sign on the back of our bikes with a picture of a car with a red circle around it. Not sure what the warning text would be, maybe "this vehicle does not appreciate your bad overtaking".

I dunno ... it might make some BSO riders think ... although perhaps not!

On a slightly different tack, there was a time about five years ago when big stickers started appearing on the backs of HGVs and busses saying, "If you can't see my mirrors then I can't see you". Personally, I think those were a very good idea and I'd like to see more of them.

The sign has to be abrupt and in your face otherwise it won't work. Fortunately I've seen a lot of people getting away with undertaking but just reading the net it seems like a lot of folk do not. If such a sign makes one person stop and think IMO its proved its worth. If 100 folk get offended they will get over it, if 1 person heeds it they may not die.

Thar's getting carried away sticking that sign on a pick up - although the elf and safety have probably had something to say. Oh and how are you supposed to read it....eh.... from the side, when it's too late ?

TBH, the ones on the back of HGV's that say 'Danger Do not pass on the Left' are pretty sensible.

Yeah, it's badly placed, and using the 'no cycling' sign is bad design, but the message, and the thinking behind it, are good.

Putting the cycle in a triangle would be more correct, as a 'warning'. But the circle is probably a better bolder image.

Actually, no, thinking about it. What they are trying to say is "No cycling down the left." - maybe that's why they chose it.

5 tonne of metal isn't enough to make them think...

5 gram of sticker... ?

I like those signs. I'm not an indiscriminate sign-hater, I just don't like the ones that point out the obvious. 'This vehicle may turn left', indeed.
