Here's a fifty cal Desert Eagle. It'll split engine blocks, punch holes in light armoured vehicles, kill large game. At 809 metres they have the same kinetic energy as a 9mm parabellum, a powerful conventional ball round, does at point blank. These rounds are so powerful that even on an auto the bones in the users forearms actually flex with the recoil. Who on Earth would be dumb enough to believe a book would stop a jacketed fifty round from one of these?

Soooo easy to test if the book will work... shoot a similar book!,
I have to assume he wished to be injured, or he was committing suicide.

To help persuade her to pull the trigger, Mr. Ruiz had even shown Ms. Perez a book that he had previously shot himself, she told investigators. In that case, she said, the bullet had not gone all the way through the text.

Back in the 90's they were very popular in rap videos and also feature in lots of films. They are a status symbol a bit like a pit bull dog or a big 4x4 in London.

Very limited use. Too bulky for an infantry, SF or police weapon. Arguably useful for hunters and woodsmen to use against bear, but smaller Mangum rounds in . 41 or .44 are ample for that in much more manageable weapons.

Yep, its really just a winky substitute for rappers and rednecks.

To be fair though, I'm pretty sure a run of the mill 9mm or .357 would've sliced through a book like Eric Pickles through an all you can eat buffet.

I wonder if you shoot a book on the ground, the resistance of the ground makes a difference. If imagine an unsupported book would absorb a lot by simply flying away...

I imagine, given this event, a lot of fun channels on YouTube will dissect this whole case.

@Drago I'm genuinely wondering how far the round would have got through these? For those of us of a certain vintage, they're a familiar reference point.

Edit: It's a set of the Encyclopaedia Britannica - the image isn't that clear.

I don't want you to do anything, I'm not your father or your conscience and if youre happy with the impact of your actions and words then that's fine. I'm simply suggesting that people might demonstrate a little consideration for the feelings of those who loved the man who die. While its unlikely the comments here are the worst they would read, and its unlikely the family and friends of the man will ever read them, would you want to read what some have written if it were your son/brother/father? I was taught it was only decent to refrain from saying things about someone out of their earshot that you wouldn't want them to hear.

I was with you for a bit Josh then I saw a clip, one chorus of USA, USA and I changed my mind

The stupidity of the parents does not surprise me. Half an hour's research on YouTube on the numerous gun channels, would have quickly demonstrated the power of this particular gun, of the penetrative power of different calibers and what is likely to happen to whatever is behind the blocking object, assuming the round is stopped. However, as informative as YouTube can be, it is also littered with people wanting their moment in the spotlight; from periods of discomfort created by cinnamon challenges, eating hot peppers etc., to potentially more life threatening or permanent damage such as walking on the outside of high buildings.
This type of behaviour has always happened, but people seem to be far more inclined to attempt it, the bigger the audience, or in the case of YouTube, the potential audience.

All this talk of guns puts me in mind of the short film specially made by Tarantino for his 'Jackie Brown' movie. The machine gun dealer Samuel L Jackson uses it to show recently released robber Robert De Niro his wares, very amusing.

Hang on: Drago told us they would punch holes in light armoured vehicles. Now we see that they will go through two but not three telephone directories. So we take all the armouring off light armoured vehicles and replace it with a few telephone directories. Simples.
