Looks like enclosed chaincases on the bikes. Wouldn't think the (presumably) white dresses would be much use after the display otherwise. At the CC gathering in Derby the other weekend, Hilldodger was asked to give permission for a bride and groom to sit on a tandem for photos - and we all thought the same thing as the photographer snapped away: wedding dress... oily chain...

They were a pain. Always getting bashed in and rubbing off the chain, a nightmare if the chain came off and you were trying refit it without lacerating your fingers, just a nuisance. I don't think they ever went out of fashion on bikes for flouncy women but everyone else was happy with tucking trousers into a sock.

I dont believe their ladies at all cycling! I mean seriously, all that co-ordination, close riding, no crashes or accidents, its probably a student initiation and all the blokes have to dress up as ladies... Were women even allowed to cycle back then? ;-)
