Hi there

One of my female friends (aged 54) would like to get into cycling to get a bit more fit. She's not planning on cycling massive distances or elevation - more likely to cycle along the canal paths and cycle paths and the odd bit of road cycling with manageable hills. I have suggested that she get an electric bike (at least to start with) to see if she likes cycling and how she gets on.

Has anyone any recommendations? I was thinking something that is not too cumbersome so she can take it on and off a train.

Thanks in advance.

If trains are involved, I believe a folder might be more accepted on trains. Non folders may be restricted during peak times.

I expect you have told her that an ebike will likely weigh more than a normal bike, and that there may be issues taking it on some trains or leaving it at some stations?

I have a Raleigh Motus and have had it for about 5-6 years - just approaching 12,000 miles and had very few problems

Mine has a cross bar but the new ones are all step through
They have Bosch motor system which works well and if reliable

The range is a critical thing - and the current Motus's (Moti??) all have a bigger battery than mine - and mine will easily do 2 -3 20 miles rides along canal paths and the like

As far as trains go - there is clearly teh problem of the rail companies and trains
We have a folder and that would sort that out - it is a carrera Crosscity-e but it is heavy and the range is much less than the Motus
also the battery had "gone" for the second time in spite of not being used much - hence my feeling that Bosch are the most reliable

Something like this might fit the bill. I have no experience with this model, but it looks good. Fits people from 5' to 6'4"

Taking them on the train only restricted on TfL to electric folding bikes. Other trains only subject to same restrictions on capacity / booking as normal bikes. https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/on-the-train/train-travel-with-bicycles/
But yes an electric folder does give more options
