I was of on hols last week when i read about the death of the cyclist in Aberdeen. Yesterday, here in northern ireland, a cyclist was hit by a car (news said he was critical). I only started commuting in Sept and now i'm nervous about commuting again.

Do any of you guys ever feel the same?

i suppose the only thing is not to think, just do it. I know i feel much better in the mornings after a commute and i have managed to loose a little bit of weight since i started to ride into work.

I sometimes feel those very same nerves when I read of a cyclist's death (particularly if it is close to home), but I remind myself that it's irrational. After all, hearing of a motorist's death doesn't make me nervous about driving.

That's true.

Perhaps a read of 'Cyclecraft' and following the advice therein would give your confidence a boost.

I see plenty of 'motorist dies in twisted metal carnage' type headlines in our local chip wrapper and it never puts me off going in a car.

Cycle craft may reassure you and give you some pointers, but use it as a tool to get you thinking rather than gospel as some of it is outdated at best and dodgy at worst.

Over the past 7 years of commuting the busy streets of London I have had 3 accidents due
to car drivers (2) and peds (1).

So for nearly 35,000 miles of cycle commuting I reckon the odds are pretty good.
So no, I never worry about it.

But I do understand that some cyclists do not feel as confident as others on the road, that's just natural.

If the news told you about all of the (thousands of) successful commutes each day that took place would it may you feel any better?
One thing that makes the roads safer is more cyclists- not less.

And anyway- did you?

I made the mistake of listening to the weather forecast, they said widespread frost... so i lay on in bed, got up later as taking the car.....no frost in sight... i did kick myself... drove to work thinking how nice it would have been to be riding to work instead. :banghead: ah well maybe tomorrow!!
