Like most parents we spent a chuffing fortune on the kids at Christmas, X-Box, mobile phone, Call of Duty etc etc.

Now they have just announced that they want a home made wooden go kart. Gawd knows where this idea has come from??

Still I suppose on the plus side, it will get them out of the house.

However, on the negative side its a job for dad.

So my first job on the list is to find some old pram wheels!

I think things have changed since we we kids Alan - it's all disc wheels and the like nowadays.

So that'll be four Zipp 900 wheelchair discs...

And no doubt in the modern world requiring 'elf and safety the kids will have to wear helmets, so some pointy hats would work nicely

YOu can buy a kit (including wheels) for a measly £185

When we did this withthe Scouts we used plans from KartBuilding as our basic guide - don't let it become a job for dad, depending on age, most kids can cut a piece of wood amd hammer in a few nails. In fact this was a great part of the fun and it means it is "their" kart

We also ended up getting wheels from old bikes and bits donated by parents. Our falll back was to buy wheels from a DIY firm - many do wheels (10") for about a tenner

If desperate - a 360 mm wheelbarrow wheel from Screwfix is £15

Useful links, thanks.

But I might try loitering outside the local mother and toddlers tomorrow to see of there are any spare prams first. ;)

I'd find your local urban nature reserve, preferably one with a stream running through it. Almost bound to be a source of wrecked prams and bikes!

yer two older boys were wanting a home made guider ( go kart ) However lack of good quality silver cross wheels  available. We watched go karts coming down the cairngorm road up at Aviemore in the summer, fookin crazy buggers and they weren`t young lads either. Had to shut the road as one had a spill at 50mph ;)

Me too, I've been hunting for decent wheels for ages. Gone are the days when old silver cross prams were dumped, now its all those daft small wheeled things. Try an ad in your local "freecycle" web site.
