Work colleague hit by 'cyclist'

I'm constantly being told at work about how dangerous cyclists are, jumping red lights, not using lights at night, riding on the pavement - the usual stuff and to be honest, quite a lot of it is true.

This morning, a colleague was hit by a 'cyclist' as he got off the bus on his way to work. The guy was riding on the pavement, had no lights and his excuse was that he was overtaking slow moving traffic! As the office cyclist, I was given the usual crap, even though it was nothing to do with me and this twat-on-a-bike was not a cyclist at all in my view.

What a hole this top Cycling City is.

It does piss me right off when someone has at some time had some kind of run-in with some cyclist - and they moan about it to me as a cyclist, like it's my fault! I mean, if they got smashed into by another driver, would they turn round and moan at me as a driver like it was my fault? I think not!

Just smile at your colleagues at work and let it brush over you. I get all the time. It gets too tiresome if you you let them get to you.

I go on the attack and denounce all motorist because a guy opened his car door on me in 1962. The more perceptive see the point the others can go....

This was suggested in a magazine, and I think it was Patrick Field in Cycling Today but I can't be definite.

I work in the NHS and am occasionally in the same position, I have borrowed the suggestion above ... look at the person's shoes and then simply state :

"You do realise Harold Shipman also wore (insert shoes) - does that make you responsible for his murders?

The alternative approach is to join in, and in doing so get them to agree to your points:

"Yeah, I hate those people too. All of us proper cyclists have enough to deal with without the pathetic minority doing things like this. I bet they're the same scum who use their mobiles while driving, park in cycle lanes and cut me up all the time."

I guess because we are a minority on the road proberly makes the ill-informed group us together with what motorists would call "Boy Racers " If we pulled every motorist up at work for bad or dangerouse behaviour that we saw on our journey to work we would never get anything done

I shouted at a "Boy Racer" on a BMX tonight because the little prick did not have lights,wore dark clothes and to top it all was riding against traffic and ME !! Motorists will not remember me with all my lights and riding within the law though,just this little tosser Arrhhhhh !

Thankfully this weeks commute with our tin top friends has been good so far......only 5 more rides to complete

Is it your colleagues' fault that some motorists sink 5 pints of lager, get in their car and run a child over? No? So why is it your fault that some cyclists are idiots?

You have an uphill battle on your hands trying to change the minds of people who think all cyclists are the same.

Derby is in the same boat. Been walking part of the way to work recently and have had cyclists pass me on the pavement almost every day, mostly without lights, though one in particular wears hi-vis, has a helmet, lights etc and yet still rides on the pavement into the far distance after passing me. When people complain to me as a cyclist about pavement cyclists being dangerous I just agree with them.
