I have got a second job to work in the evenings which will be 4 days a week. I start in June.

I want to do this to buy a new road bike and cycling gear. I scroll through evanscycles on a daily basis. I have set a goal to save £850 for a bike. That's my main aim.

My main income goes to my wife and bills. So I'm left with very little. Plus we have a joint bank account so I can't hide money.

Has any worked 2 jobs and how hard is it?

My working day starts at 6am and finishes past 10pm most nights, this is the first year in the last 39 that I intend to try and not do any 7 day week's, Feb/March 2013 I did 47 days without 1 off. So you can make your own mind up as to have I or not.
Do not neglect those close to you though.

This will surely depend on what the two jobs are.

I'm a professional driver, (apparently ;) ), and there are strict legislations governing how many hours I can work in one day, so there's no way I could work two jobs even if I wanted to, but the one I have leaves me fubar'd most days anyway!

You need to consider family time as well, Mrs Smoo and I are often like ships in the night as it is, it would unbearable if I had two jobs. It's one thing to sacrifice family life through necessity, but quite another to do it just to fund a luxury purchase.

I do hope it all works out for you though.

I had 3 jobs at some point, years ago did 6 years with about one day off a month.
It's up to your stamina and your family commitments I suppose.

When I was at college I would be up at 7am, have classes during the day then work a few days a week till 10pm at a beauty salon. Weekend were spent working 9am-3pm in a hotel. I managed it for a year before suffering exhaustion.

Now I work 30 hours a week, study, do all the mum stuff and still manage to exercise and have a social life. It's all about the work-life balance if you ask me.

A lad who works with me Mon- Fri 8-4.30 goes home then starts a cleaning job 6-8pm 5 days a week.
Sometimes the day job and evening job holidays don't match up which can be a pain.

I once posed the question- " it's 3.30pm and I get a call saying there is a VIP coming at 7pm, we need to dress a room with fresh flowers and plants as the college would like to tap them up for x million £ donation.... Where do your priorities lie, with the day job that pays the most, or the cleaning job?"

He is single, so has nobody else to factor in.

He will cycle upto 120 miles on a Sunday.

I have two jobs, postman and as a soldier in the Army Reserve. Royal Mail is 6.15am until 2.15pm five days a week. Once a week I am away with the army for training in the evening, once a month I am away all weekend, once a year I am away for two weeks and could be anywhere, I have just spent two weeks in Cyprus. On top of this I end up doing more. They are the two jobs I have.
For me it does cause problems sometimes, I have missed birthdays and important events because I have put the army first, I have just done a six hundred mile round trip to do three days training. Two jobs are sometimes are to manage, my example is a bit of a strange one, but don't let yourself become a stranger to your family just because of work, I sometimes feel like I have my priorities wrong, and know I may regret it.

Either you expect him to work outwith normal hours or you don't, it should be made clear when he starts the job. Posing ultimatums like that to an employee is unprofessional, not to mention unfair.

In his contract it states overtime when required. This is a job he's been in for 30 years. He has been doing the 2nd job for 10 years.... He should have read company policy and declared the job.
There is a company rule that you declare any additional jobs-- he hadn't.

I doubt that situation would arise, it was just interesting to see if he had thought of this kind of clash.

As to say I'm unprofessional and unfair........ You don't know the first thing about what I am. The people at work would say I'm fair and bend over backwards to help. But there you go!

You didn't mention that it was stated in his contract.

I would assume most employers would ask employees to work overtime and state in their contract. It also depends on the employee and their attitude. I work with people who work their set hours and that is it, they will not work overtime, fair enough, others like myself would and do work above and beyond. As a boss you have the right to ask. It helps to know who you can rely on for support when needed.
