I personally wouldn't work a second job to afford a bike, especially not one from Evans.
Get thee to Ribble , or to Ebay. You can do much better than an £850 Evans bike.
And as far as the day job goes - my manager has a perfect right to ask me to stay late, or come in early, or whatever. I have a perfect right to say no if I need / want to.
My contract says that I can be asked to work reasonable overtime, given reasonable notice.
IMHO, it's up to me what's reasonable.
Come in at 0800 next Saturday? Most likely.
Come in at 0500 tomorrow? No chance!

2nd Job? Feck that! I don't even want the job I have now!
Why?

You didn't mention that it was stated in his contract.

I never asked him in a way that was threatening, it was more of a "so you're juggling these 2 jobs, what happens if and when (highly unlikely) they collide?"

And that was the point I was making to Soup......

People sign up to do multiple things- hobbies, jobs etc and invariably there comes a point when something has to give way to the other cos you can't do 2 things at once!

A lad who works with me Mon- Fri 8-4.30 goes home then starts a cleaning job 6-8pm 5 days a week.
Sometimes the day job and evening job holidays don't match up which can be a pain.

I once posed the question- " it's 3.30pm and I get a call saying there is a VIP coming at 7pm, we need to dress a room with fresh flowers and plants as the college would like to tap them up for x million £ donation.... Where do your priorities lie, with the day job that pays the most, or the cleaning job?"

He is single, so has nobody else to factor in.

He will cycle upto 120 miles on a Sunday.

His priorities would lie with an employer who pays him a wage which doesn't necessitate having to take on a second job.
