Worrying rattle

I've just returned from a fine afternoon on the bike that was marred by a worrying rattle. Trying to find the where the noises come from is a real nightmare. It seems to be the back wheel. I've checked the obvious - the mudguards are firmly attached, saddle bag and lights don't move. The only thing that does rock slightly is the rear cassette so will have to tighten that up. The wheel is firmly in place and the pedal cranks are nice and tight. Any ideas - or is it my old bones ?

The little nut round the bottom of the valve is loose?

Sometimes there can be a little bit of swarf (whatever) inside the rim, if it is the hollow type.

I borrowed my cousin's bike. The cassette rattled on that because it needed a thin spacer and he had forgotten to fit it.
