When I was 18 or 19 I was fairly sure that a nuclear war would wipe us all out. There were American generals lining up to tell us it was inevitable. In my Uni there were signs in the library advising you what to do if there was a bomb scare, they basically said, it's up to you were you go as the IRA bomb could be anywhere. Climatologists of the time were predicting a new ice age, the complete depletion of natural resources and oil within 30 years, topsoil erosion which would create massive food shortages and China's population would equal that of the rest of the world. Times change, threats and perceptions change, plus ca Change (or is it va?).
