Nice to see the comments section already includes a varied selection of rantings from the usual mouth-breathers.

I see the paper's a Johnson Press title, and uses the same website as the Edinburgh Evening News. We have the same story about Edinburgh roads in the EEN today, which has attracted OUR usual ranters !! See here.

I'm always so tempted to post a comment trying to correct those in the wrong, but I've got better things to waste my time on.

Now where's that freshly painted wall????

What a shame the picture accompanying the story shows cycling bad practise - overtaking on the inside where they cannot be easily seen by drivers. Then they wonder why they are often hit by cars moving in to turn left. Cyclists should remember that they are subject to road traffic law the same as drivers and stick to it.

How this person can tell that the cyclist was undertaking is beyond me. Its as equally likely that the rider was being overtaken by the vehicles.

Quality!

#19 - well, if the cars are moving they are too close together, whereas if the cyclist is NOT moving he'd've fallen over. Simples!

I got as far as this one and gave up ..

I have to admit that cyclist make me very nervous ..... most drivers try to avoid passing them too close, and by doing so place themselves in a rather dangerous position if there is on-coming traffic. Sometimes they wobble all over the place. do not make clear hand signals - basically they do make drivers worse.
The cycle lanes should be away from the main traffic routes : making it easier and safer for both cyclist and motorist.
.. so remember folks it's all OUR fault when someone does a nutter overtake; if only we'd stop making drivers worse by wobbling about all over the place and inconsiderately being where there's oncoming traffic.

Weird ain't it? I manage to commute to work by car every day, and observe loads of cyclists. But for some strange reason I've never felt the need to kill one, press one into a kerb, throw macsquiffy wrappers at them, or demand they pay this fictional road tax.

All I get are tailgaters - in cars, red light runners - in buses, carved up - by cars, head-on loonies - in cars & trucks, speeders - in cars, and dangerous drivers - in transits.

Perhaps when my knees heal up and I start riding again I'll try commuting to find out what I do on a bike that makes people want me dead.

I think just being there is enough of an irritant for some.

Some of those comments are class.

"I used to do a lot of cycling so always had sympathy for them. Until one darted out in front of my rather conspicuous Land Rover and ended up in a tangled heap with his bike -thankfully no-one was hurt. Said cyclist then had the audacity to blame ME; even went to the trouble of filing a complaint with the police!

Needless to say my sympathy for them and their cause has dwindled since then."

Particularly liked this one. I felt the same about black people until one of them was rude to me. [joke, by the way - just in case]

But all cyclists pay vehicle excise duty - the amount is, after all, based on engine emissions. My bike has zero emissions, so I pay zero VED
