Statistically I think it's around be overtaken by a left turning or too close to the kerb lorry.

Worst hazards were the hazard warning lights being used by the bloke driving erratically up the street by Roseburn Park last week..... to excuse the fact that he was driving whilst using his mobile !!

His window was open and I was so tempted to get close and yell at him, as he was paying zero attention to the road in front of him. But I let it go as I didn't want it to spoil my weeks of calm and incident free cycling ;)

(Definitely a new one on me - seen hazards used to excuse parking on double-yellows and in bus lanes whilst the owner 'just nips into the shop', but never before have I seen them used like this. Incredible.)

Has anyone mentioned the Bus that 'overtakes'* you then pulls in immediately at the bus stop and squashes you into the kerb?

* ie. the millisecond the drivers door has past you.

Cars that draw level with you as you're approaching a load of parked cars and allows no room for you to pull round them.

Motor bikes that overtake you as you're about to filter thru traffic then SLAM their brakes on to creep thru the gap as they're so much wider than you.....grrrr.

Cars that enter roundabouts you're on and don't give a blind f**k that you have right of way and almost wipe you out.

The bus driver of a bus from a company called "Fairweather" was pretty hazardous tonight. Thankfully I caught up with him from behind, so I was able to see that he would suddenly veer over and drive 3/4 into the cycle lane on Ferry Road every now and again.

I decided to stay behind him until he eventually turned off a mile or so later. I was thinking myself lucky that he hadn't approached me from behind and then veered over when he was alongside.

Oh, and the knob-end driving a BT mini-van (Fiesta, I think) who drove right out onto Crewe Toll roundabout without stopping or looking, almost taking out the woman already on the RAB at the time. He was on the phone and paying zero attention to the road. I remembered his number plate and was going to contact BT when I got in, then the bus distracted my attention and I completely forgot it.

I therefore nominate drivers on mobiles talking / staring into their laps texting as the worst hazard for urban cyclists.

About time plod started using CCTV to catch these idiots and the law was changed to ban them for life. You can't be in charge of a ton or so of speeding metal and not even look where your going or what's happening up ahead.

Can't believe no-one's mentioned other cyclists. I appreciate I'm in danger of becoming some sort of cyclecraft-spouting bike Taliban but I can be out from the kerb making myself large enough for the cars, buses etc to see me and have to think about passing me correctly and then some tw*t can try to cycle up the inside of me .

I can normally anticipate what a vehicle is likely to try to do to me by judging the road layout - e.g. left turn up ahead, so watch out for left hookers and cover the brakes - but cyclists can move quite erratically (I do expect I'm not entirely innocent of the charge myself sometimes:blush:).

Add to that all sorts of other faves such as RLJs, appearing off of pavements, bad lane selection at junctions, not looking over their shoulders....

I probably only notice the actions of other cyclists more as we're the only ones going at more than walking pace :biggrin:!

The all-year around version of the autumn leaves in wet weather.

... and carrier bags - I went over one once - it got tangled around the cogs and my bike stopped dead - I was going some at the time! God knows how I didn't go over the handlebars!!! I steer clear of those nowadays!!!

Never had an encounter with a crisp packet but I will definately be more vigilant in future!!!

Agreed, just a few idiots on bikes give the rest of us a bad name which convinces ignorant driver that we don't belong on the roads. There needs to be better education for all road users...

cars who overtake you then suddenly turn into a left junction forcing you to slam your brakes on, why do it!!!

A police car turning into London Rd Police Office in Glasgow did that to me the other day. I was almost going to stop and say something to the driver but thought it was hardly worth it but then at the next set of lights a guy in a VW Golf pulled up next to me saying how riduculous the cops driving had been. Knowing that I had a witness I wished I had stopped and said something.
